HTTPS encrypts the connection between visitors and your site; certificate renewal and correct configuration keep it working.
An SSL/TLS certificate helps a browser establish an encrypted HTTPS connection to a website and verify that it is communicating with the intended domain. Visitors can see whether a connection is secure, but a certificate alone does not prove that a business is trustworthy or that a site is free of every security issue.
Key considerations
Keep certificate renewals monitored and check that all pages and embedded resources use HTTPS. Mixed-content warnings, expired certificates and incorrect domain coverage can undermine confidence or prevent some visitors from reaching the site.
Putting it into practice
Use HTTPS alongside good account security, software updates, backups and careful handling of customer data. Ask your hosting provider how certificate issuance and renewal are managed, and who will respond if renewal fails.
