When Does a Business Need an ERP System?

An ERP can connect important business workflows, but first identify the information gaps and processes it should improve.

An ERP system is worth exploring when teams rely on disconnected records and spend too much time reconciling the same information. Map the processes that matter—such as purchasing, inventory, sales and finance—and note where handoffs fail or data is entered more than once.

Key considerations

Before choosing a platform, define what must improve and which workflows should remain unchanged. Compare how the system handles permissions, reporting, integrations, data export, training and support. A large feature list is not useful if the everyday process is difficult for staff to follow.

Putting it into practice

Plan implementation in stages. Clean up data, involve the people who will use the system and test real scenarios before rollout. Technology supports the process; it does not replace clear ownership and training.
